Princeton Pod Life

With a pandemic raging, Princeton students aren't allowed to set foot on campus, but this doesn’t mean they can’t emulate university life. Many are forming pods of five or more students, and living together in houses across the country. Living responsibly under the same roof, they can share in their educational experiences, and form a lasting camaraderie. Thanks to art director, Marianne Nelson (at Princeton Alumni Weekly) for another fun assignment!

Harvard Remote Learning

Here are some drawings for Harvard Magazine. In this age of COVID, even a school with a 40-billion dollar-endowment has struggled with the limitations of remote learning. This article is about how they’re attempting to make the virtual experience more engaging and meaningful for students. The drawing above addresses ways in which Harvard is attempting to make zoom called more interactive, and multi-dimensional (with polls, charts, breakout sessions, etc)

A history professor is exploring the idea of 3D tours of cultural monuments and ruins.

Music students are collaborating remotely to compose group compositions.

Harvard has an excellent IT staff to support needs of professors.

Enormous thanks to art director, Jennifer Carling, for another super-fun assignment!

Lux Vidal

Here's a portrait for a new client, Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, NY. It depicts alumna, Lux Vidal, a noted anthropologist. She has devoted her life to studying indigenous tribes in the Amazon region of Brazil. She became a forceful advocate for supporting the rights and culture of the Xikran tribe.  Not only was this a fascinating assignment to collaborate on, it gave me an opportunity to incorporate one of my favorite elements into the artwork, maps! A special thanks to designer, Hannah Fichandler, and editor, Jean Smith, for this fantastic assignment.

This piece for Princeton Alumni Weekly accompanies a story about the university’s famed eating clubs. Change is in the air as 9 of 11 of these clubs now have elected female presidents. Their goal is to make these unique meeting places more diverse, inclusive and safe. A special thanks to art director, Marianne Nelson for this tasty assignment!

Sitting In at Princeton

Here's a new piece for Princeton - about a student reporter embedded at a sit-in in the school president's office. The students were protesting the university's use of Woodrow Wilson's name on a campus building. They were also shining a light on his racist views. While the president's office was in lock-down for 32 hours, the reporter (Gabe Fisher) was able to blog real-time updates about negotiations between students and the school president, Christopher Eisgruber (standing). The sit-in sparked a passionate debate about race, legacy, political correctness, and the concept of scrubbing history.

In this illustration detail, the university president leans against his desk on the left.

Below are ideas I submitted for this story...

Athletic Management

The illustration above appears in the latest issue of Athletic Management - a publication geared towards college and school athletic departments in America. The article is about onboarding -
a form of orientation through which new employees gain the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviors to become effective members of the organization. If done properly, this practice can lead to very happy and productive employees.

This drawing accompanies an article about how coaches and athletic departments can be vulnerable to lawsuits. The best thing coaches can do to protect themselves is to know the law. If they take proper precautions before setting foot on the court - they can avoid a visit to the court of law.

I always have fun brainstorming ideas for each illustration. Here are the sketches submitted for the illustration above:

Thanks to art director Pam Crawford for another fun assignement.
