Short Order Lovers

Here's a new piece I cooked up for Rutgers Magazine. It accompanies an article about a Greek husband and wife who were the longest running couple employed by this great university. They were short-order cooks - and given that they both lived to over 100 years old - I'd like to know what's in the tasty burgers they served up! Thanks to art director Jon Van Cleaf for another fun assignment.

Holy Cow

Here's my interpretation of Holy Cow, an iconic ice cream parlor located in my town. On summer evenings, there are usually long lines of people outside the door, waiting to get their fix of this addictive treat. I drew this piece with ink and charcoal, directly onto an 18.5" by 16" map of Red Hook, NY. It's part of a series called Local Life, which is on display at Taste Budd's Cafe until October 31st. If you're in the area, I hope you'll stop in and take a peek!

Quality prints of this piece are available here.

Word Play

I've always been fascinated by the streamlining of corporate names. What does a name-change imply? Kentucky Fried Chicken was founded in 1952 by Colonel Sanders (pictured above). Today it is the second largest restaurant chain in the World. In 1991 the company simplified it's name to KFC. In terms of letters, the slimmed down logo went through a drastic weight loss, right?

Colonel Sanders opened the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Utah in 1962. Although he sold the franchise in 1964, he remained the franchise's official ambassador. He died in 1980 at the age of 90.

Thanks for visiting. You can see more color illustrations here. From Apple to IBM, many iconic companies logos have evolved over the years. Do you have a favorite logo evolution?
