Leon Botstein

Bard College is a vital part of my small town, Red Hook, NY. This institution adds so much culture and diversity to our community. With this pandemic raging on, I really miss the energy and spirit all the students bring here. Here’s a portrait of the school president, Leon Botstein. He’s also the principal conductor of the American Philharmonic Orchestra.

Thanks for visiting. You can view more of my map portraits here, on my website.

Nelson Mandela

Here’s a portrait of anti-apartheid revolutionary, and former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. He is a true profile in courage, and what a real leader looks like.

Signed prints of this piece are available here!

John F Kennedy

This portrait of President John F Kennedy was sparked by a line from a famous speech he gave to 450,000 West Germans, "Ich bin ein Berliner" ( I am a Berliner). This 1963 speech was delivered during the cold war, bringing comfort to West Berliners who feared an East German occupation.

Teddy Roosevelt

This sketchbook spread was inspired by The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, by Edmund Morris. This former US president wore many hats - as a naturalist, hunter, author, taxidermist, colonel, historian, conservationist, and politician.  Although Mr. Roosevelt died at age 60, he seemed to live 9 lives in that span of time.

Roosevelt was famous for his teeth, his love of hunting, and for his military leadership.

He was a US president, a big-game hunter, and colonel in the Rough Riders

"Believe you can and you're halfway there."    - Theodore Roosevelt

Word Play

"In order to become the master, the politician poses as the servant."  ~ Charles de Gaulle

Words can be so powerful. I love playing their meaning in a visual way. This is the first installment in a series exploring the intersection of words and images. I call them Word Plays. I'll be posting a new one every Thursday, so please visit again soon.
