Princeton Dispatch art

This piece for Princeton accompanies a story about a debate between progressive public intellectual, Cornel West, and conservative legal scholar, Robert George. Their dialog  focused on the “truth-seeking” mission of liberal-arts universities. You read the story here!

Lux Vidal

Here's a portrait for a new client, Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, NY. It depicts alumna, Lux Vidal, a noted anthropologist. She has devoted her life to studying indigenous tribes in the Amazon region of Brazil. She became a forceful advocate for supporting the rights and culture of the Xikran tribe.  Not only was this a fascinating assignment to collaborate on, it gave me an opportunity to incorporate one of my favorite elements into the artwork, maps! A special thanks to designer, Hannah Fichandler, and editor, Jean Smith, for this fantastic assignment.
Below are sketches I submitted for this project:

The Princeton Experience

Here's a new drawing for Princeton Alumni Weekly. The university was recently ranked as the best school for African-American students by Essence Magazine.. Given recent racial unrest on campus, this story gauges student reactions to this prestigious ranking,

Talking about race through drawings is sensitive business. Here are some ideas I submitted:

A special thanks to art director, Marianne Nelson, for another thought-provoking assignment.

Mercersburg Cover art

Mercersburg Academy is one of America's premier boarding schools. They publish this magazine for "family and friends" three times a year. The latest issue is dedicated to stories about how the academy is literally a "home" to many students and faculty during the school year. The editor, Lee Owen, asked me to visualize this theme for the cover - and I had a blast sketching out ideas. The winning solution combines the school's logo (and color scheme) with a traditional house - conveying Mercersburg Academy as a peaceful and happy abode. Thanks to Lee for opening the proverbial doors to a really fun assignment.

The cover art was modeled after this logo:

Here's my sketch process, from the final comp to initial thumbnail ideas:

After doing initial thumbnails and revised sketches, this comp was approved to go to finish.

I had fun incorporating the logo and map of the school into these skectches
My clients initial idea was to incorporate the school's logo into a house key - which opens a door.
The cover art was born out of the simple thumbnail on the left.

Thanks for visiting!

The Importance of Being Social

Loomis Chaffee is a premier boarding school in Connecticut. These drawings accompanied an alumni magazine story; The Importance of Being Social. It's about how social networking sites can benefit the Loomis Chaffee community. Art Director Patty Cousins asked me to illustrate logos of popular sites, but with a fun twist. I hope you find them...pinteresting?
