I’m honored to have this piece on display in a public art box, which is located at 7260 South Broadway in Red Hook, NY (right next to Holy Cow Ice Cream). This artwork is titled From the Poles to the Equator, and it was designed to draw attention to endangered and vulnerable species around our planet. The National is a band whose music has helped me (and many others) through troubled times. Their songs seem to tap into our worst anxieties, and then they help us exorcise those emotional demons. I drew this portrait while listening to their new album, The First Two Pages of Frankenstein. It was inspired directly by lyrics from their singer, Matt Berninger. If you're familiar with the band's music, you might be able to guess the song.
Without a doubt, the mighty polar bear lives in the crosshairs of climate change. Because the environment they thrive in has been so dramatically altered by global warming, these magnificent creatures have been classified as a vulnerable species.
