Chronogram Magazine Cover

It was an honor to have my artwork featured on the cover of Chronogram, the premiere arts and cultural magazine of the Hudson Valley. This portrait depicts Eva Perón (also known as Evita), the iconic first lady of Argentina. I'm an avid reader this publication, as it lets me know what cool stuff is happening in this region. It was a thrill to be a contributor to its pages.

The magazine featured more of my portraits on the editors page, as well as in a write-up about my artwork (which you can read here).

Below is this drawing in full context. Signed prints of this piece are available here, in my Etsy shop!

Celebrate Irvington Poster

Irvington, NY is a Hudson Valley town with a lot of culture and an interesting history. The writer who created Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving, called this beautiful community his home. I was thrilled to illustrate this poster for their annual street festival. Thanks to art director, Elena Erber, for this fun project!

Living Local Exhibit

With eyes cast towards my Hudson Valley community, I painted some little pieces dedicated to it’s many charms. They’re up at Taste Budd’s Cafe in Red Hook through January. As an introvert, I live a little too much in my own head - contemplating big thoughts, ideas, and dreams. Given this, it’s very easy to take my environment for granted. I consistently come back to the theme of community in art - because it reminds me of all the wonderful things right before my eyes. Drawing local landmarks is a way of contemplating why they are so special. For the viewer, I hope these pictures bring out some nice memories, and frames these places in a fresh light. If you live in the area, I hope you'll check out the exhibit!

Hispanic Hudson Valley

Here's a recent piece for an article about the burgeoning Hispanic community in the Hudson Valley. Many of these residents are immigrants who are limited by their native tongue. But even with the language barrier, most in this community believe strongly in the American dream. To help them navigate through our culture, Bard College started publishing  La Voz Magazine. This Spanish language publication helps families find resources such as affordable healthcare, housing and ESL classes. You can read this cover story in the Winter issue of About Town magazine.

Below are some sketches for this piece...

Thanks for visiting, and hasta la vista, my friends.

Intersection

Here's a drawing of the main intersection of my town, Red Hook, NY. The original piece measures 36" by 12",  and it was drawn with ink and charcoal. Quality prints are available here. It's part of a series called Local Life, which is on display at Taste Budd's Cafe  until October 31st. If you're in the area, I hope you'll stop in and take a peek!

Hudson River Rising

This piece is on my drawing table today - for an article discussing how global warming could affect the Hudson River. I'll be posting more about this piece soon.

Heroin on the Hudson

Heroin use in the Hudson Valley has spiked dramatically in recent years. This story for About Town addresses this serious issue in Dutchess County (where I live), and lays out ways in which local officials are confronting the problem. The author also interviews a 21 year Rhinebeck resident - who tells a cautionary tale about how he fell into the clutches of heroin - and how he eventually kicked the habit. Below are some sketchbook ideas for this story:

Thanks for viewing. You can see more B & W work here.

Red Hook Farmers Market Logo

Last week the mayor of my village, Ed Blundell, asked me to create artwork promoting our local farmers market. I came up with this graphic, which will go on posters, tee-shirts and other promotions. I had fun combining Red Hook's logo with elements of our farming community - along with placing it in the context of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. I've always been envious of musicians who write catchy pop songs. As a consolation,  I've composed an image that's got a really big hook.

Opening Day, Red Hook Village Farmers Market

Here are some sketches I whipped together for this rush assignment:

Live music, opening day of the farmers market

Here are a few color schemes I submitted:
This is the original color piece I envisioned.

I tested out a few alternate color schemes, one tying in to my town's name, Red Hook

Thanks to Mayor Ed Blundell for getting me involved with this farmers market,
which takes place right on my street:-)

Thanks to Heather Oslander Gibbons for a great poster design.

How Tweet It Is

I love collaborating with local institutions. These spots were created for Marist College, which is just 20 miles down the Hudson River from my home. This alumni magazine article addresses how the school is embracing social media. Twitter, Facebook and other platforms are utilized to promote the school to prospective students, advertise events, and keep the community connected. Marist has plenty to offer, and social media is an excellent way to get the word out.

This spot accompanied a chart showing Marist College's 'following' on various sites.

Facebook acts as a portal to prospective students.

The process of creating three simple drawings can get pretty messy, as evidenced by this pile of sketches and references in my studio:

A special thanks to Leslie Bates giving me into this fun assignment.
You can see more social-media-themed illustrations here.

Update: You can see my latest project for Marist College right here.

A Riverkeeper Retrospective

The Hudson Valley is considered the birthplace of the modern American environmental movement. Riverkeeper was founded by one of those original activists, Robert H. Boyle, to protect the Hudson River from polluters. This organization advocates for the region through environmental litigation. Here are covers I've contributed to their newsletter over the years.

A patchwork quilt-themed representation of the Hudson River

This art appeared in 2002 Society of Illustrators Annual.

This issue addressed how General Electric's PCB pollutants were affecting the Hudson River.

Detail of a striped bass made of PCB pollutants.

This was part of a successful campaign pressuring GE to remove PCB pollutants from the Hudson.

The slogan "Think globally, act locally" is true.
Riverkeeper campaigns continue to hold polluters accountable,
and help protect this beautiful valley I call home.
