At a recent artist reception, a lovely woman aproached me and expressed how much she liked a portrait I’d drawn of Muhammad Ali. Unfortunately, it had already sold, so she commissioned me to draw this new one. I must say, it’s always daunting to draw a legend. The original drawing, a tiny piece, is below.

Here's a portrait of iconic civil rights leader, Malcolm X, drawn on an old map of the streets of Harlem. One book that has always stayed with me is The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Learning about his struggle (and transformation) has great value. If you haven't done so, please give this book a try.

Malcolm X

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is my favorite book. This civil rights leader's story addresses issues of race, crime, religion, hate, and ultimately transformation. His spiritual journey from a perspective of hatred towards one of love is truly powerful. In this age of intolerance towards Muslims, we can all learn valuable lessons by reading his story.

This portrait was drawn directly on fabric. It measures 16" by 20"
