Lyme Aid

Here's a new piece for Rutgers Magazine. Tick-born Lyme disease is a growing nemesis to those who live near nature, and it's very difficult to diagnose in patients. Researchers at this university are developing a far more reliable test to positively identify this blight. That's great news for people afflicted with this difficult-to-detect disease. Below are some of the sketches I submitted for this story...

As someone who has suffered from Lyme disease. I'm thrilled that Rutgers is conducting this important research. A special thanks to art director John Van Cleaf for another fascinating assignment!

Ticks are Breaking Bad

I recently illustrated a story about the dangers of ticks - and the horrible diseases they carry. As I was doodling ideas, this crazy image came into my mind. It was inspired by the main character in the TV series, Breaking Bad. Walter White is a chemistry teacher who loses his job, and becomes a meth cooker in order to support his family. As he rises in the ranks of the drug world, Walter's legend grows. He becomes known by many nicknames: Heisenberg, The One who Knocks, and the Danger. Much like drug dealers, ticks can deliver horrible chemicals into peoples bodies. But unlike a TV show, ticks are a real danger. Be careful out in nature. Danger lurks.

Tick Season is Here

Deer ticks are the scourge of the Hudson Valley. These tiny pests live almost anywhere there's grass, brush, or woods. Aside from Lyme Disease, scientists have discovered other blights these critters can spread.  This article for About Town describes these new diseases , and highlights ways to avoid getting bitten (staying out of tall grass and brush, covering your body thoroughly with clothing, wearing insect repellents containing DEET, etc).

Bambi...or Beezlebub?

This drawing for About Town accompanied an article about the polarizing nature of deer; animals adored for their Bambi-like appearance, and despised for the diseases they spread (as well as gardens they destroy). It must be hunting season, because I just heard gunshots as I posted this!

Having been afflicted with Lyme Disease, I could certainly connect with this story. Here are a few subtle ideas I submitted to the editor:
